Model Railroading > A little shove will helpDate: 04/23/24 10:05 A little shove will help Author: rnb3 In O scale an empty 3 bay hopper weighs 16-ish ounces and can hold at least a pound of coal! Even with the layout limits of 15 to 20 cars, these train are heavy! Working helpers are a must! The Appalachian & Ohio uses a collection of Alco RSD12s to add the extra push. A&O #321 is brass import from Car & Locomotive Works with a LocSound V5 decoder driving a very large Tang Band speaker. All of the mechanical and electrical work is by Bob Sobol and paint is the work of the layout owner, David. This 75 ft long 2.75% helper grade on the layout averages less than a foot deep and right at eye level, so the weight and sound is very much "right in your face". Both photos are by David Stewart

All the credit goes to David Stewart, this is his effort! These trucks are fully equalized and are very entertaining watch operate! "I especially like the ties."... Another talent of David. He makes his own ties from the scrap lumber used to build his house. He has a photo guide explaining his process at: https://www.aorailroad.com/cutting-rr-ties https://www.aorailroad.com/glueing-rr-ties Rick Bacon Windsor, CO |
