My parents moved us to California in 1967 but I never saw the F's in action from memory; just wasn't in the right place and I was in the 7-11 age range before I was in a place where I could see some SP action - mostly on the west valley line passing through Davis and Woodland CA, and crossing the causeway into Sacramento. That was mostly SD45's and tunnel motors.

When you first arrived in 1967 a good number of them were still running but by 1970, most all were gone. Regards, Jim Evans Date: 05/17/24 11:46 Re: F - Unit Friday In Minature Author: SPDRGWfan FiveChime Wrote:

It wasn't until my dad's last two years in the Air Force he had a desk job so we moved to Davis and he commuted to Travis until retiring in 1973. Davis was a decent place for train watching since two main tracks went past down town and eastward to Sacramento, and another line split off north past the Hunt Wesson tomato plant and up to Woodland and points north. There was a decent amount of traffic on that line while I lived there. Sugar Beet trains, The Amtrak Coast Starlight, and mixed freight trains. I'm mainly Rio Grande and do have a bunch of F units, but busy working on the layout so no good place to stage them at the moment. I grew up around the SP so I currently have 4 FP7's in bloody nose and icebreakers, and the only steamer I have is one of the AC10's and a bunch of ice reefers for it to pull, all Intermojntain. Maybe later this year I'll get them out after I get some of the messy scenery parts done. 1) currenty layout. 2) one of my single stripe F's based on a rebuilt F3 into an F9m 3) Rio Grande Zephyr on the previous layout. Those Rio Grande Zephyr F9's in the photo have been replaced now with the newer ones which have the modernized details (nose Mu receptacle, additional grab irons, toe creepway and spark arrestors. Athearn has announced more modernized single stripe F units coming over a year from now, which includes F's that pulled the silver lady in her final years. In the mean time I have a boatload of D&RGW loco's from ScaleTains coming late this year I am saving up for. Cheers, Jim Date: 05/19/24 01:34 Re: F - Unit Friday In Minature Author: brv200 Jim,
as far as I can assess from the distance, the pictures of your layout look pretty promising. It looks like you had a lot of space available. I've been collecting D&RGW F-units for many years (only Genesis) in all kinds of available paint schemes. Maybe next Friday would be a good opportunity to post a few pic of them. Enjoy your weekend Franz SPDRGWfan Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Franz, Nice eye candy! > > I'm mainly Rio Grande and do have a bunch of F > units, but busy working on the layout so no good > place to stage them at the moment.
