What Western Pacific Steam Tenders Used with F-3s?
Author: RRBMail

I'd like to model Western Pacific short lived The Royal Gorge. It was first pulled by an F-3 coupled to a steam loco tender. Does anyone know what class of WP steamers provided their tenders as water cars for the F-3's steam generator? Any TOs know of a book that has good overall pictures of the steam tenders used in the service? Thanks in advance!

Think they were from the 327 class steamers. Corrections welcome.

Alas, The WP 327 class had giant tenders that do not look anything like the two F-3 water tenders shown in many passenger train photos.

"The diesels' steam generator water tanks were supplimented with water bottles fashioned from the tenders of three scrapped 4-8-2's (178's tender was not among them)."

Yes they came from the 171-180 class 4-8-2s. You can find pictures in Guy Dunscombs Western Pacific Steam locomotives, Passenger Trains and Cars, Jim Eagers Western Pacific Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment, Joe Strapacs Western Pacific Diesel Years, and John Ryczkowskis Western Pacific Pictorial.
Of side note, if your modeling early they were still painted black, later they were painted silver and orange numbered 851, 852, 853.
