Whirlybirds!

Union Pacific U50s 47 and 52 are spiced by GP9b 176b on the California Livestock Special (CLS) on the Prairie Scale Model Railroaders Club in Lombard, IL. The special has 25 cars today and is adequately powered. The locomotives are all Athearn Genesis and the cars are a mix of Athearn and BLI.  The U50s are on their maiden run.

Thanks for looking,

Awesome pics and models.  I've heard of the U50s referred to as Whirlybirds here on TO, presumably due to the sounds they made.

That Baby-B is really dwarfed by those two massive GEs. Neat combo.

There was a huge fan right behind the cab and at the rear similar to a swamp cooler fan that made loud whirring noises when running.

Thanks for the discription as few still around now that ever heard them run would only know. Those units I always felt very much had an odd look to them. Just glad I am not too much into HO, um in quanity as do have Scale Trains turbines for one and Rapido NP pax cars and run on a club layout.

I knew a retired UP conductor from Hastings , NE years ago and he called the U50's 'whirleybirds" .

Had never head that name before, but they were long gone before I came around. I was expecting helicopters, but I really like those locos.
