Full Swing on the Onondaga Cutoff - Conrail OCS cars, C30-7...
Author: RGDave

Good morning.  Modeling season is in full swing on the Onondaga Cutoff, with several projects cooking.  It continues to be an exciting time - so many good things coming available these days.

1 - The growing Office Car Special on the Onondaga Cutoff, now with four cars (and more to come).  Here the train is heading west past CP 282.

2 - A fun challenge for this train was Conrail 'Big Dome' no. 55, a former Santa Fe car that I detailed and painted to match the 1994 appearance of the prototype.  Walthers passenger cars these days are really beautiful models.

3 - Speaking of beautiful models, the Rapido Trains C30-7 release to my eye is spectacular too.  I have had a ball detailing and weathering them up for service.

Thanks for looking!

Most excellent!  I always enjoy your scenes and they are a good match for the location just south of the city of Lake Effect snow and Wayne Mahar and the weather deck cat.

On the C30-7's fold the mirror behind the cab window back flat against the side of the cab. It would block the view of the forward mirror if left out like that.

Looking good Dave. Is there a story behind that unique dark olive color on the business train fleet?

Are you aware that Conrail car 11, the former EL 10/5 sleeper "Spirit of Youngstown," was offered by Rapido, and is being offered again?

I don't know when the reservations were or are due.

CSX still runs the car as "Michael J. Ward," but it has been signficantly kitbashed from its Erie/EL/Conrail exterior configuration.

Thanks, all!

Art, yes - Rapido is for the first time offering #11 fully painted in this scheme.  I have one on order and it will join the fleet.  Broadway Limited is working on #9, the theatre car, too, estimated to be announced about a year from now.

Good call, Ted - I wanted weathering behind both mirrors, but the rear ones as you note will be folded down for the in-service look.

And, White Rose Hobbies through their 'Bethlehem Car Works' subsidiary is doing a kit that is almost ready for production of the second 'modern' version of Conrail #1, a six-axle open-end observation car.  I am pursuing each of these - definitely need a proper end of train car with working markers for this one.

The 'Conrail Pullman Green' color was chosen for the office car fleet in the L. Stanley Crane era, and was a custom color chosen for this fleet.  It is lighter than Brunswick Green, but darker and less brown than Pullman Green - not an easy color to match.  Scalecoat's version of PRR Brunswick Green is close, but it is hard to find these days as it is out of production.  I used TruColor paint to mix my own to match the factory paint from the Rapido E's.

More to come on this!

We've just announced the order deadline of March 17th.

That factory really can only work on one Rapidfo thing at a time, so they couldn't do these until the TurboTrains were delivered. Now they've made most of the tooling modifications to the passenger cars to add the track-powered lighting and they will be ready to start production next month, and - so they tell me but I am not holding my breath - deliver before Christmas.

Included in that batch are our 20th anniversary cars, which they promise will be delivered for our 21st anniversary!

We'll see!
