Atlas HO B30-7 & B23-7 Locomotives!
New Model! New Road Names!

General Electric’s “Dash 7” locomotive line was introduced as a replacement for the older “Universal-Series” of the 60s and early 70s. “Dash 7” series improvements included increased fuel efficiency, tractive effort and reliability. The B23-7 was a direct replacement for the 2,250HP U23B model, while the B30-7 replaced the 3,000HP U30B. The first B23-7s were produced for Conrail in September, 1977, and the first B30-7s were produced for Frisco three months later.

B23-7 production continued through 1984, with a total of 535 units built. Conrail was the largest purchaser of the model, with a total fleet of 141 units. 199 B30-7s were produced through 1981, with Chessie System (C&O) owning the larges fleet (64 units).

Several features distinguished B23-7s and B30-7s from predecessor models. The long hood stepped outward in the area of the exhaust stack to accommodate a relocated oil cooler. In addition, the frame was 2 feet longer than that of the U23B. An FB-2 style truck was offered as standard equipment, but some railroads opted to use “trade-in” trucks. Therefore, AAR type B and Blomberg trucks could be found on some models. Six power assembly doors (located near the center of the long hood) indicated that the B23-7 was powered by a 12-cylinder GE FDL engine. Eight power assembly doors in the same location help to identify the B30-7, which included a 16-cylinder FDL engine.

There were three distinct “phases” of GE 4-axle “Dash 7” locomotive production. Our models are of a “phase 1” unit with a 36’2” wheel base. Phase 1 production lasted through the spring of 1979.

Features:
The Atlas B23-7 and B30-7 locomotive models include such optional/road name specific details as:

Yes! REAL Chessie B30-7's! :) (Bachmann did them on their B23-7's a few years ago)
I'll probably have to get a Family Lines B23-7 too

If you are content in not having any SP B30-7s, then good for you!

Hate to break this to you highhood, but you won't be able to get those SP B30-7s on your want list, at least not without extra legwork and/or waiting on a future run. If you took the time to comprehend Harry's post, you'd understand that Atlas is NOT DOING undec B30-7s in this initial run that have the correct body features needed for an SP/SSW unit. You'll either have to order extra parts from Atlas (FB-2 trucks, etc.), or swap shells/frames from different undecs. Otherwise, you'll have wait for a future run that will hopefully include SP and/or SSW units, or at the very least, undecs with the correct mix of physical features needed to make an accurate SP/SSW B30-7. The waiting game begins...

Sad that no SP/SSW units are being produced, and I wonder why not in the first run. Also maybe I am missing something here but to quote atlas's info from their website "199 B30-7s were produced through 1981, with Chessie System (C&O) owning the larges fleet (64 units)".

Per Richard Percy's site (EXCELLENT Resources) it is stated there that SP had 84 units delivered with #'s 7800 - 7883and SSW had 26 delivered with #'s 7774 - 7799. Or could this be because of licensing??

Nope, Richard's site is correct as usual - SP/SSW had the largest fleet of bought-new B30-7s. As for why Atlas isn't doing them in the first run is anyone's guess, but it shouldn't be an issue of licensing, since they signed an agreement with UP some time ago.

Paul and Harry,

You guys don't need no stinkin' SP B30-7's. Model real locomotives like UP patched SD40M-2's and UP SD70M's.

Remembering Tehachapi in August 1978 (long before PE knew of it),

About 8 AM, SP 7812 East - B30-7/SD39, 36 two bay cement hoppers, SP bay window caboose.
About 1 PM, SP 7805 East - 7805 / N&W SD40-2 / CR U36B / SP SD45, 94 cars, 4 SD45/SD45T-2 helpers, 52 more cars, SP bay window caboose

Stop doing that! Geez, now you're gonna make me move my modeling era even further back!

We wouldn't want you to do that, you might hurt yourself. You can't just grunge over SP engines in the 70's, you have to have clear, clean lettering and scarlet noses and ends instead of solid blocks of grimy black over gray.

I screwed up the order of the consist (stupid scribbled notes). The correct consist is

SP B30-7 7805 / CR U36B / SP SD45 / N&W SD40-2

The helper is SD45 / SD45 / SD45T-2 / SD40

HP is HP, UP used B-23-7s in the Powder River Basin for a while just because it had a little more oomph than three Dash 8-40CWs.

In 1997, when UP used UP B23-7's as well as C&NW GP50's and NS B23-7's in Powder River coal service, single units were added to three unit consists of SD60's / Dash 8's / Dash 9's at South Morrill, Nebraska for the round trip to the mines and removed when the loaded train returned to South Morrill.
