Passenger Trains > Dirt road to an Amtrak F40 graveyardDate: 10/10/11 19:53 Dirt road to an Amtrak F40 graveyard Author: erie833 Just a few updated photos of the remains of several former Amtrak F40's still at LTEX near Youngstown, Ohio this past Saturday. They have been there a while now, but as always it's a sad sight to see, and it seems that piece by piece they are disappearing.
Somewhere down the road someone will probably stand- much as I did with these remains- and shed a tear in a field for the last remaining GEVO units. One of the lines of partially cut up units. Cab section of #351 sits in the weeds. Both the cab and the rear of #322 are now facing east! Do you have shots of the SP units in the background?

Question is: where would you run it and what purpose would you use it for?

I remember my first look at an F40 back in 1976 when they started working the San Diegans. Wow, 35 years ago. Sad photos but thanks for posting. JMW Date: 10/11/11 00:18 Re: Dirt road to an Amtrak F40 graveyard Author: Fizzboy7 Eye popping and sad photos. Thanks for sharing.

Could've rebuilt those F40s with 710s and made em more fuel efficient... just thinking out loud.

You haven't lived until you've spent 12 hours on one of those jalopies while it was providing H.E.P. They didn't ride that well and they weren't that reliable either. Spent a fair amount of time on SFE's F/FP-45s and AMTK's P-40/42s and preferred any of them to F-40s. The fans denigrate the excellent SW-1500s as cruds but revere F-40s - too bad.

A BIG advantage of the Genesis engines is survivability for the engineer(s) in a wreck. Several of them who survived wrecks in Genesis units would probably have been killed in an F40PH. We had prior permission arranged, but were approached within minutes of being out of our car with someone making sure we had an OK to be there. The local police also watch the area pretty close. Drop me a PM if you can Rugby. RAD Date: 10/11/11 18:52 Re: Dirt road to an Amtrak F40 graveyard Author: burlingtonjohn Amtrak784 Wrote:

Trainorders own, F40PHR231 has his own F40 ... perhaps he can answer this question?
