Passenger Trains > NJT F40's used in Revenue Service (uncommon)

NJ TRANSIT has just two EMD F40 locomotives remaining in active service (from an order of 17 delivered in 1981).  These units have been primarily used in  back-to-back fashion in work train service for the past few years, and have also pitched in (individually) as cab car replacements when needed.  But they have not been used on the "locomotive end" of an NJT passenger train for several years.  So yesterday's suprise one-time use of both units (in back-to-back arrangement stemming from a recent ballast train move) on train 1171 (Hoboken, NJ to Suffern, NY on the former Erie Bergen County and Main Lines), was noteworthy, and well documented by the local enthusiasts.  While the weather was less than ideal for photography, the unusual assignment made it worthwhile.  

Note that NJT also operates 8 F40's owned by Metro North in Hoboken Division service (four of which are former NJT F40's).

I was one of ten photographers in the photo line at WC Interlocking in Waldwick, NJ, where the train is crossing from Track 3 to Track 1.  Restored WC tower (dating from 1886) that formerly controlled the interlocking is visible on the right.  September 1, 2020.

Reportedly the consist ran back to Hoboken on the first train out of Suffern this morning (before daylight) and the F40's were taken off the train upon arrival.

My son and some friends were able to catch this ar Rutherford yesterday.  I wasn't able to leave work early.
