Most Amtrak Service Operating on Northeast Corridor

February 12, 2006
9:00 a.m. ET
Amtrak Media Relations, Washington: 202-906-3860

Despite significant snowfall, followed by high winds, most Amtrak trains are continuing to operate on the Northeast Corridor (Boston-New York-Washington), subject to weather-related delays. Disruptions have been primarily on the New York-Philadelphia-Washington segment of the NEC, but trains are operating approximately every two hours.

Travel today has been light.

Acela Express Service:

Four morning trains canceled between New York City and Washington, passengers directed to Amtrak Regional Service.

Amtrak Regional Service:

Seven morning trains canceled, all others operating Boston-Providence-New York City-Philadelphia-Baltimore-Washington-Richmond-Newport News.

Amtrak service between the Northeast and from other regions (Empire Service, Silver Service, Auto Train, others):

Continuing to operate, subject to delays to and from the areas of heavy snowfall and/or high winds.

This information is correct as of the above time and date and is subject to change as conditions warrant. Another update is expected by 4 p.m. ET, today.

Passengers are encouraged to call 800-USA-RAIL or visit Amtrak.com for schedule information and train status updates.

Looks like all scheduled departures westbound from Boston have been pretty much on time so far, although snow didn't start here until about 5am. Eastbound departures from NYP are another story - 150, scheduled to depart at 7am left after 10, and 162 is running almost three hours late. 160 and Acela 2250 are cancelled.

Looks like the only corridor train to leave DC so far today (11:45 ET) has been 54, the Vermonter, which got underway 3 hours 15 minutes late.

The first Empire Service of the day - 281 - got out 2+ hours late. Sunnyside may be having trouble getting trains out this morning.

But they are moving unlike other modes of transport.

I agree, these storms are an opportunity for Amtrak to show what it can (or can't)do.

As of 2:30pm westbounds from New England seem to be doing better than Eastbounds. Of the first four trains out - including one Acela - three arrived or are expect to arrive NYP within 15 mins of schedule. The other is about 45 mins down.

Trains from DC are another story - looks like 4-5 hours delay getting into NYP.

By the way, as someone else noted, not much else is moving. Was supposed to fly to LA this morning but UA has cancelled everything from BOS/MHT/PVD/BDL today. Lots of colleagues attending the same conference report being stuck at Newark and other east coast airports.

Probably do to the BO cars they got up there, combined with what winter can do, glad they got out, and 79s the only one that actually left at a respectable hour, unless they're all waiting for "slots" since the NEC is operating at 2 hour headways!

49 approx 6 hours late into Erie, PA and will be on hold for about an hour, owing to:
-- track 1 out of service west of Erie (Sperry Car defect),
-- track two occupied at Fairview, PA with car to be set out --impact detector hit,
-- eastbound van traffic

Man, kinda wish the 4 track was still in place so if something happens on one track, they can run the train on another track! Man winter can kill you!
