Nice to see those 1990's vintage P40's being put to good use! Your tax dollars at work...

Also, why are there only 13 out of 15 practically brand new HHP-8's on the roster? Any plans to fix the OOS ones, or will they just be retired after 5 years of service?

P40 -> P42?

Whatever happened to the proposed program to rebuild / upgrade the P40s to P42s?

they've started rebuilding/overhauling the older P32-8's (P32-8HW) first so here are some recent reports on the first one released (AMTK 507 in Phase V paint!) and others receiving work at Beech Grove right now:

Let's hope the new RCM (Reliability Centered Maintenance) program at Amtrak, currently being implemented for Acela, will help with the "state of good repair" at Amtrak. This program has worked very well worldwide, including the nation's nuclear sub fleet, war ships, and Boeing aircraft. If RCM is done properly, and so far it is, then the equipment failures and mechanical issues will see huge improvements. It's about time Amtrak got on-board with this program---they've needed it for many years.

Genesis Units

How many Genesis units, in the P40 series, has Amtrak leased out to commuter agencies (i.e. Connecticut Shore Line East Service etc.)? Amtrak should have a surplus of diesel locos - hopefully they are actively pursuing in trying to lease some of them out to commuter or other agencies. Stored units just seem to cost more to put back in service.

Very few, I think maybe 4 or 5. They leased the ones that were in Phase V paint, and were probably the last P40's in service on the Auto Train. All of the Phase IV P40's are stored.

Well that's too bad - it seems that some F40s found homes in various places - in running mode that is. One would think excess Genesis units could equally be leased out. I know NJT just completed its purchase of more diesels, but they are looking into leasing some dual modes from Amtrak for their proposed NYC-Atlantic City service, to start some time next year. Course Amtrak's dual modes are not in large quantity as some other locos Amtrak seems to have around.

State of Connecticut is leasing 8 units, two for Shoreline east and 6 for Metro North Shuttles.

So where are they all stored? And why? I have operated many freight dash 8's and they are in okay condition. I would think a 15 year old loco should still be in good condition hauling passenger.

All stored P40's are due a major overhaul, they are stored in Bear Delaware but since our elected leaders keep shorting budget there is no $$$$$$ to do the overhauls.

Still at 30% availability for the HHP-8 electric units. Bought by the same people who OK'd the fat tilt units, and oversaw the billion dollar boondoggle known as the Boston Extension. Time for bigger bonuses and more money down the Rathole...
