Passenger Trains > Moribund NJT cars on NS Southern Tier

I was travelling through the Endless Mountain region out of Scranton in Northeast PA on Monday and took the scenic route from I-81 to NY Route 17. This is one neck of the woods I have never been through.

It was along PA Route 171, paralleling the ex-Erie main, near Susquehanna Depot, that I came upon a long string (20 or so) of NJT single level cars, with general freight tied to the west end, on a siding near SR Tower (still standing). They were dirty and had many windows broken. These cars resemble Amtrak's Horizon Fleet.

Anyone have info on why these cars are here? Maybe on their way to Hornell?

IIRC, these were the cars the NYS&W were jockeying around a few months back. These cars are not handicap accessible, and have been mothballed by NJT.

Agree to the extent that the track you observed along PA 171 is not currently operated by Norfolk Southern. Between Binghamton and Port Jervis, the Southern Tier is leased to the Central New York Ry., an NYS&W affiliate.

I have no reason to dispute the explanation given in the previous post for the NJT cars' presence there.

Surely some transit organization could purchase them and use them. Not EVERY car in a train has to be handicapped accessible. I thought only one car needed such accesibility.

VRE is looking for cars.
