High-speed rail in "The Nam".

Can't help but wonder just what qualifies as a "third world country?"

Interesting; seems like when I did my "365 and a wake up' with a DEROS of 07JUL68, the only train I saw all year was a freight X-ing the road from Tan Son Nhut to downtown Saigon (had about 100DTG at that time).

I caught only the vaguest glimpse of the diesel locomotive hauling the ten or so "40 and 8's' on the narrow gauge ROW.

Keep the water buffalo off the track.

Sage advice! Their worth was often more than you would pay for the accidental death of their children!

I can remember in 71 being at Red Beach just north of DaNang watching the trains to Hue coming by. We could see them as they skirted the coast below Hyvong Pass.

"Hai Van Pass", translates to "mountain of the clouds" or some such.

This is Ho Nai village near Bien Hoa in '71. The only other train pix I have were taken from too far away to be worth sharing.

The shell of that diesel looks Czech. Similar to Soviet class ChME2....

I'm pleased to learn that some of us, such as Ms. Evans and others who simply go by "handles', who were called to serve had some occasion to view railroad "action' in Nam during their tours. As I noted earlier, during my 67-68 tour, I saw one train, likely with the same class of loco as posted above, at the X-ing on the "main drag" between TSN and Downtown Saigon.

I did once locate the train station in Saigon, but I was "not about' to consider a "joy ride' say to Bien Hoa, where one could catch a Blue Goose (USAF Bus) back to TSN.

When we're safely retired, and no longer under the gun, many of us can enjoy the luxury of identifying ourselves.

I spent most of my 1966-67 time in country north of the areas described. I remember hiking along meter-gauge track several times, but it hadn't seen a train in some time. The only train I saw the whole time in Southeast Asia was during a brief stop in the Phillippines.

Looks like the Japanese government wants to recover some more of it's R&D and tooling up for HS trains. Let's hope the Vietnamese government doesn't do what AMTRAK did to the original ACELA design!
