Damaged cars at Beech Grove.
Author: Woodman

Drove by Amtrak at Beech Grove two days ago and saw Amtrak 31592 sitting there torn up from the windows up and all windows out. Could not see on the other side. Looked like it fell over and moved over some rocks and the damage was pretty substantial. Today, I drove by again to show my wife the car and behold, 31006 was there. It looked to be in fine shape on the road side, but when we went by on the road and turned around we saw a badly damaged car. The end was almost pushed together, really messed up. Question: Where these in a wreck together or were they in different accidents? Second Question: Where and when did these accidents take place?

Separate Wrecks... 31592 sustained $700,000.00 in damage on the City of New Orleans on 4/6/2004.

Train 27 Wreck

The car related to train #27 had a derailment due to track related maintenance issues and ended up coming to rest on the side of a rocky mountain cliff - so to speak. Or at least that is my understanding of it. I didn't think this had that much substantial damage though. Interesting. Perhaps Caltrains is eying this one up.

CalTrans... not Caltrains;

CalTrans = California Transportation Commission, the statewide transportation department, all forms... Including the DOR (Division of Rail) which partners with Amtrak to provide the Amtrak California Corridors (Pacific Surfliner, Capitol Corridor, San Joaquin)

Caltrain = Peninsula Commuter Service for the SF Bay area and funded by the a board assembled only of the counties and cities the service operates through.

That is confirmed by the NTSB report on the derailment of train #27 near Home Valley, WA.

A sobering review of some of Amtrak's bad days.

Caltrans refers to the California Department of Transportation, not the California Transportation Commission, a separate agency.
