It is not uncommon for people with time to use the various transit services to reduce the cost of a NYC-DC trip (or points in-between). Most people bite the bullet and ride Amtrak between Wilmington and Baltimore to avoid buses, walking, etc. On occasion I go to Philly from Metropark by taking NJT to Trenton, the River Line light rail to Camden and then the PATCO train into Philly. This is cheaper than SEPTA (and obviously Amtrak) and surprisingly is faster than the SEPTA Trenton - Center City service.

Unfortunately, PATCO leaves you quite a hike from 30th Street if you are headed beyond Philly on Amtrak.

True - River Line/PATCO only works if you are going to Center City Philadelphia.

Why get off at 17th street? If your coming into Philadelphia on PATCO get off at 8th and Market. Walk through the Galleria Shopping Mall to the SEPTA Market East Station. There board any westbound train to 30th street. SEPTA doesn't check tickets between Market East and 30th street.

Last time I rode SEPTA between 30th and Suburban, the conductor asked to see an Amtrak ticket. (Stub was ok)
