Not surprised. Anywhere between MP 14 and MP 5 on the MTZ Sub is a high incident area.

Coroner being called out at 6:40p. At 5:54p, EB Capitol #542 hit a vehicle at Cutting Blvd grade crossing in Richmond, CA. Per stopped driver witnesses, the fataility victim in his maroon Honda went around the gates and was pushed a 1/3 mile down the ROW. The train with Honda car wreckage around the cabcar stopped at Pullman Avenue (next to the old Pullman Factory) where the small pedestrian crossing is located across the double mainline and waterside drill.

Reportedly Amtrak police is being called out, I suspect UP PO's are already showing up on the scene out of West Oakland. Reported 167 passengers onboard.

You sure uh? I haven't seen him once anywhere around here in the East Bay over the last year. Hmmm, call it rare good RR PO karma for me...

AMTK#545 has turned around at Richmond tonight to go back East to Sac as #542 once bussed passengers from the train at the ACCIDENT site arrive.

Whoops-

I lucked out. Left San Jose at 300pm and arrived in Sacramento early at 600pm which included transferring all the passengers from one car to the others at Davis due to an awful burning smell in the troubled car. Car, train and passengers did arrive OK in Sacramento.

Yea the cars look like they've been parked for a year now. What a joke! No wonder the JPB cut them lose.

Per UP Special Agent, looks like Cal-P mainline is about to be closed again right at MP11.0 where the car wreckage was cleared. A tow truck leaving the scene fell into a ditch alongside the ROW between the tracks and Carlson Ave.

So in short, a tow truck is coming out to rescue... the tow truck.

Re: Iron Triangle?

Thanks for the details Ryan,, you weathered the storm!
I hear about the rough part of Richmond being the "Iron Triangle".
Looking at Yahoo maps I see that central Richmond is surrounded by
the UP main on the east. The BNSF main in the northwest, and the BNSF lead from the yard to Stege on the southwest. Can anyone here confirm that this is the iron triangle?
Thanks, Cal-P

Yes, you just defined the infamous Iron Triangle of Richmond.

Re: Iron Triangle?

The actual Iron Triangle was bordered by:

1. SP main line (the Cal-P)
2. Santa Fe main from their Richmond yard eastbound
3. Santa Fe Oakland District

Those three rail lines formed a nice triangle.

After 1979, the Santa Fe Oakland District was abandoned and one leg of that triangle was removed. Today the Iron Triangle name sticks and the BNSF "Siberia Lead" provides a replacement leg for the historic triangle.
