Restaurant near Pgh. station question
Author: NS4271

Any one know if a good restaurant for breakfast is near the Pittsburgh Amtrak station? I'll be arriving on 30 on a Sunday, and then get 44 later that day. Thanks.

I always make sure to plan my itineraries to never take Train 30 out of Chicago on a Saturday.
Amtrak is addicted to running train 44 as late as it does because PennDOT wanted it that way, and Amtrak doesn't want to rock the boat even though Penn DOT no longer subsidizes it.

Restaurant Near Pittsburgh Train Station

There is a hotel near the train station - Hyatt or Hilton I believe (big high rise (like the rest of the buildings in Pittsburgh I know), but they offer an amazing breakfast or brunch. The main dining room is on the second floor. They have a big open atrium (lots of glass windows to let light in). Plus you can sit their and sort of unwind if you want. It's almost directly straight out the main entrance of the train station and then on the right hand side I believe. Unfortunately, I do not remember street names, and the hotels out there have also swap around out there. Wish I could be more helpful on street names and the exact hotel. But it is only a couple of blocks from the train station.

Pamela's is a bit further. The Amtrak station is near Liberty Avenue and 11th Street and Pamela's is on 21st Street near Smallman, so you have to walk 10 blocks east and about 3 blocks north.

But Adam is correct with his advice to walk on Penn Avenue. Exiting at street level, cross Liberty Avenue and walk along 11th Street in front of the bus station to Penn Avenue. Don't walk on Liberty Avenue from the station to 21st Street as the sidewalk is narrow, traffic is fast and walking under the railroad overpass on Liberty is very unpleasant.

Another local favorite place for breakfast in the Strip District is DeLuca's at 2015 Penn Avenue, a couple of blocks closer to the station.

The hotel nearest to the station is the Westin at 10th Street and Liberty Avenue. Also within walking distance on Grant Street and Sixth Avenue is the Omni William Penn.

If you opt for breakfast in the Strip District and you're looking for something else to do before boarding 44, try the Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh History Center at 12th and Smallman Streets.

The Strip District once functioned as the produce distribution center as well as an industrial district and the Pennsylvania Railroad had a yard in this area. It is now a popular nightclub and restaurant district, but the produce distribution function is still present (albeit on a smaller scale) and shopping for produce on Saturday mornings is a popular Strip District activity. Several industrial buildings and a PRR warehouse building still remain.

I can tell you where NOT to eat...the greasy spoon in the Greyhound station across the street!

I thought that was gone? Actually I thought a lot of things were gone or redeveloped "across the street" near the Pittsburgh train station. I could be wrong though. I once walked in there - big mistake!
