Cardinal 4.5 hours late out the gate
Author: sevenmilesiding

Winter continues to catch Amtrak by surprise as train 50 departed Chicago 4.5 hours late at 1015pm tonight. Air and highway traffic has largely returned to normal in the Windy City. This is one reason why I will not ride Amtrak when the temperature drops below 32 degrees. Heads up Cincinnati for daylight photos.

P05010 still shows moving in CSXT's system. Out of Indy at 0728. Shows GROVE DTC Block, MP BD47 on Indianapolis Sub at 0916, so it's between Connersville and Hamilton. Barring any freight interference, should hit Hamiltucky around 1000-1015, which would put it into CUT around 1100 or so - roughly 8 hours late.

Scratch that - system must not have been fully updated - now shows through Hamilton and passing Glendale at 1003, so it should be at Union Terminal before 11 assuming they don't get held at NA or Hopple Street.

It's by NX Tower Newport Kentucky on the C&O around 10:50 am. Two units #1 and 176.

Picture: Crossing KY SR 9. I had to really bust some a' to get this one.

My best Cardinal story was when the train was canceled out of Chicago due to a hurricane...in Florida! This was years ago, and I was traveling to Huntington, WV. I came in off of the Eagle to transfer. CSX told Amtrak no Cardinal even though the hurricane was nowhere near its route. It seems that the CSX dispatching center in JAX was not certain it would remain open, so the train was just canceled.

I taxied to Southwest at Midway and flew to Columbus and got home from there.

Not Amtrak's fault, but typical of the Cardinal's problems.

I think it has been reported that there were some late arriving trains from the Western Long Distance trains on 12/11.

Mostly self inflicted this time. Equipment swap in Chi due to B/O coach. Had to thaw out the replacement, then some switching issues due to cold. After departure, freight ahead unable to throw switches. Did pretty good after leaving Indy.
