Man hit by Caltrain dies

BY VICTOR GONZALES

Daily News Staff Writer

A man was struck and killed by a Caltrain on Wednesday night, an official said.

The man, a 61-year-old transient, was hit by southbound train No. 386 at about 7 p.m. at the San Mateo Caltrain station, Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn said.

Witnesses said the man was curling into a fetal position as the train hit him, Dunn said. The man was airlifted to Stanford Hospital where he later died.

The train’s engineer asked to be relieved from duty, Dunn said.

The incident caused delays between 10 to 30 minutes in both directions. Both directions were open by about 7:30 p.m.

The Transit Police Bureau of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident, Dunn said.

The fatality is Caltrain’s 16th of the year.
