These are PE 170 class of 10 city cars built in 1912 by Pullman for the SP for service in Oakland and Alameda. Sent to the PE instead for use in Pamona, San Bernadino and Long Beach. These were the only city car on the PE which could run under the 1200 volt wire on the San Bernardino line. Two of the cars eventually went to Oakland in 1919. The rest were sold around 1935. One car, the 179 is at Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris CA. J Date: 02/08/10 07:26 Re: PE cars in La Tuna Canyon, Los Angeles Author: Pullman Hey, just what the Junktion needs! These would make a fine addition to the used Red car lot.

I first saw these cars around 1966 when they served as a private residence of an elderly couple. At that tine they were still in PE red and all the numbers were visible. In addition, there was one wooden car - a 500 class if I recall correctly, and all were partially obscured by heavy brush, making photography difficult. Now I will have to locate the pictures I took for comparison.
I seem to recall that some time after my visit the property was put up for sale, and as a result the Orange Empire Railroad Museum acquired number 179, as stated above. Cheers, Jack Edited 2 time(s). As cool as they are- they'd be even better if the orig paint was still there, plus the orig headboards, stating some famous LA street/destination-- can't have everything though-- so I'll be happy with them in their silver paint!
