Passenger Trains > Shots fired at a Metrolink train in Corona, CA

Just heard the San Bernardino Sub DS issuing warnings to all trains near the West Corona Metrolink station (mp 27.17) to be on the lookout. Apparently a Metrolink train just took two hits to the cab car while passing, no injuries though.

This is taking place in the inland empire of Southern California...

But the walls surrounding that glass aren't bulletproof. Could be a problem...

I worked for the PATCO Hi-Speed line, which has three stops in Camden NJ, for 17 years and I do not recall any trains ever being shot at.

In fact today I changed from a RiverLine train to a PATCO train in the rush hour and so did many other passengers.

Perception is an interesting concept!!

My future wife and I were returning to New York City from Poughkeepsie on a Penn Central RDC in early 1970. We were just north of Harmon and we took a gunshot to a window where no one was sitting. We thought it was a rock at first, but the impact point was to sharp to have been a rock. But we were all surprised it did not penetrate the glass.

The thing that was a little odd...we were just beginning to slow for the stop at Harmon and we were in the middle of about 5 tracks on either side. The bullet, or whatever it was hit us on the west side with a terrific bang and there was absolutely no one in sight to have thrown a rock, hence, a bullet.

I also remember that the RDC stopped in Harmon, but we didn't change. I guess it had a shoe for all-electric operation.

I always was disappointed to see an RDC on the trip north, but in looking back, they were pretty slick , but that little GM inverted diesel had sort of an anemic sound. It reminded me of an Flexible bus with a Buick straight 8.

The shoe would not helped much as RDCs have no traction motors.

Before all those condos were built along the river north of Harmon, there was a lot of duck hunting in the wetlands, etc. It's possible somebody's aim was a little off.

The first day or two or deer season is very dangerous to humans, as well. Esp in NJ and NY. Some folks are known to party all night, and then go out in the crack of dawn, loaded for bear....

The papers always have articles about the numbers of hunters mistaken for game animals in the days after the season begins.

The FRA requirements call for stopping a 22 caliber long rifle bullet traveling at 960 feet per second. A 22 long rifle bullet could certainly be lethal, but in terms of guns, it's little more than an overgrown BB gun. We had cause to research the requirements in the process of replacing all of the glass on our private car, Tioga Pass. We installed sealed dual-pane units composed of 1/4" laminated safety glass outside, a 1/8" air gap, and 3/8" FRA Type II glass inside. The car now meets the requirements, but I don't know that I would choose the window as my shield against bullets...

The Ferdinand Magellan had sheets of plate steel around its bulletproof windows, and a thick platform of steel underneath. Of course, the car weighed as much as a locomotive, but it was pretty safe.
