Jaanfo, thanks. An earlier search on the web failed to turn up anything.

Cheers,

Because in a lot of (if not all) of these instances, the crew is relieved after the trauma of killing a person - meaning they could well be in a state of shock. Not a good operator at that point.

There's a separate thread on exactly this topic.

I ran over a dog with the 1522 and that was bothersome enough without hitting and killing a person.
Damned Black Lab was running up the middle of the track ahead of us and kept looking back. I was ringing the bell, blowing the whistle and opened the cylinder cocks and he just kept running up the middle. All he would have had to do was jump off either side. We finally outran him. Sad.

Sadly that's what most dogs do... they run the gauge of the tracks and usually won't deviate once they start. As for people, who knows?!

Most are on drugs/alcohol and/or suicidal. No one who runs trains kills anyone or anything. We are the unfortunate observers of these wholly preventable incidents and have to live with it for the rest of our lives. Some engineers turn to drugs/alcohol themselves to try and cope with the pain instead of getting help and moving on-that's what's truly sad.

Trespassers make the unfortunate choice of being in the foul and usually pay the ultimate price of their lives-- stay in the CLEAR and stay ALIVE.

BTW... Christmas is one of the worst times for depression and trespassers begin to appear in alarming numbers this time of year.

Well, this makes 3 strikes and 5 fatalities within a week for us here in SoCal. This has been a terrible week.

NJ Transit had a long run of suicides / trespassers this summer and fall. I wouldn't be surprised if they have extra security at some of the multiple strike places (Hamilton, Ridgewood, Paterson, etc) over the next few weeks.

The lack of daylight also depresses people along with the holidays.
