Passenger Trains > Transportation Condition and Performance (C&P) Report

This report to Congress is issued annually by the Federal Highway Administration. It contains statistics on the condition and performance of the highway system, the nation's public transit systems, and -- in the 2010 report, for the first time -- a chapter on freight system performance.

The current report is not yet publicly available, but past reports may be found on FHWA's Web site.

The statistics on highways (safety, performance, and condition) make interesting reading since they do not support the "infrastructure crisis" hysteria of recent years. Among other things:

1) Highway condition and bridge condition have been improving slowly over the past decade
2) Highway safety is at an all time high, and fatalities (34,000 in 2009) at their lowest level since 1950
3) Congestion has decreased slightly

In terms of safety, driving (deaths per 100 million vehicle miles) is about half as safe as public transit (deaths per 100 million passenger miles). Further, transit has been getting *less* safe while highway safety has been improving.

It makes an interesting read. Look for the 2010 report when it's available to the public.

Statisics mean nothing to most Americans.
