Railfanning in Lynchburg
Author: WAT

I am going to Lynchburg, Virginia tomorrow, 12 May 2011, arriving late. I will be there for several days. Where are the best places to see trains ? I am not a photographer, so light will not matter. TIA, Bill Teasley

Well, the only passenger trains in Lynchburg are on the Southern, so your best options to see them would probably be either the passenger station or the huge James River trestle north of town.

Look up "Wreck of Old 97" on the internet--probably the best know version of the song commemorating this disaster was recorded by Johnny Cash around 1957, but it dates back to at least the 1920's.
One of the lines in the song is "...but it's a mighty rough road from Lynchburg to Danville/with the line on a three-mile grade...." According to one reference, there's a memorial plaque near the site of the wreck, which was apparently not too far from Lynchburg.
