Old folks need rides from trainside to LAX station
Author: poultrycar

There are 20 of us arriving LAX on train #567 tomorrow (Wednesday) all are a bunch of 80+ year old kids going to the San Antonio winery. We have taxis lined up, but we can not find a contact for electric carts to pick us up trainside.

Anyone have a number to call, or do they just run a shuttle until all are handled?

These youngsters are a bit concerned as walking that far is out of the question.

Many thanks.

Redcaps will give you all a ride. No need to call ahead, they will be there. They only have a couple carts so it might take a few trips.

When my wife and I came into LAX around 11 pm (#11 running late), and we headed for the Metro parking garage, one of the station staff workers offered us a ride in his cart. Not that we couldn't walk that far, but we welcomed the security of a radio-equipped escort in the gloomy, cavernous parking area.

See if the taxi's can pick you up at the MTA Metro building instead of the front of the union station. It may be closer.

Thanks very much. I have communicated with our tour director and have passed this information along to her. She feels much more at ease.

From what the three of you said, we should make out OK..

Hard to believe such service exists in the US. Why are you not being charged exhorbitant taxi fares for this?
BTW, I love your handle. "Poultrycar" is VERY intriguing.

Re "Poultrycar", it is a long story. In the thirties my dad was a live poultry shipper from Iowa to New York and Philadelphia. As eight and ten year olds, we used to play in them and we made it a point to be around when they got switched in and out of the local siding. I have very vivid memories of the insides - the caboose stove, jail type bunks, trap doors in the floor for feed, water tanks overhead and a hand cranked mixer. Not to be forgotten were the slots in the floor at each end to scrape all those chicken dropping onto the track.

Right at the bottom of the depression this was a golden opportunity for young men to go East to the big city as car attendants. The freight charges included a ticket home on a real passenger train, and they all had big stories to tell us kids upon their return.

The poultry was intended for the Kosher trade, as they had to be killed by a rabbi. This all came to a sudden halt in the mid-thirties when they figured out that it was a lot cheaper to send rabbis to Iowa than live poultry to New York. I remember that my mother sometimes put them up for the night.

Thanks for your interest.

This is too late, but as Laura and I were escorts over the years
with PRS, RLHS, TUT and on PV's, I would suggest to charter a mini-
bus (24psgr). A couple of years ago, we utilized taxi service to the
San Antonio Winery, and it was about 6 bucks each way plus tip. The
driver never heard of the winery, so I was the navagator!!

Also, treat the bus driver to lunch...The group also stays together..
