NJ Transit's busiest stations
Author: Lackawanna484

NJ Transit periodically issues a "fact sheet" with details of its many transportation operations. One that surprised me is the stations boarding the most passengers.

NY Penn, Port Authority, Newark Penn, Hoboken - expected

Princeton Junction and MetroPark were the surprises for me, with about 7,000 each per day, about half the total for Hoboken which has six lines converging. I knew they were busy, but I'm surprised they outpaced Newark Broad, New Brunswick, Elizabeth, Trenton, etc.

NJ Transit's current NEC morning plan has several trains running express from PJC to Newark, and on to NY, as well as others skipping close in stations like Elizabeth. Although NJT had a diesel express from Trenton to Newark for a while in the 1990s, all trains currently go through to NY Penn. I wonder if there would be a market for a diesel or electric making limited stops like Trenton, Hamilton, PJC, MetroPark, Airport, ending at Newark?

As I recall it was westward only. Just
to clarify: it wasn't nonstop to Trenton.

Limited stops though. Maybe New Brunswick, PJC and Trenton.

Given that a substantial number of passengers transfer to PATH at Newark, perhaps not all trains need to go to NY Penn, which is capacity constrained, any way.

IF THE FARE WAS THE SAME TO NYP, how many riders would stay on at EWR instead of transferring to PATH?

Many PATH riders from Newark go to Jersey City where many investment firms and banks have extensive back offices. Others go on to World Trade where they can walk to many World Trade area, World Financial Center, and Wall Street area addresses.

I suspect many would be delighted if their NEC or Long Branch etc trains still went into Jersey City, like they did in the 1950s and early 1960s.

Hoboken having only 16K seems light but I wonder how many people that used to go to Hobo transfer at Secaucus such as myself.
