Sunset at Havre de Grace (Maryland)
Author: Mgoldman

Sometimes, though rarely, Havre de Grace allows enough puzzle pieces to
fall into place for a good shot. Overcast a few hours earlier and not
a cloud in the sky afterwards. In between - maybe four or five trains
running in shadow. This one slipped through.

Let me be the first to say WOW, this is a beautiful picture. It has mood and image of the day or even Amtrak calendar or timetable quality.

I second that "WOW!" And I also agree that this is certainly worth of "calendar material" and/or the timetable cover.

Let me also mention, it has been a while since I've seen a NEC train with eight coaches (and one cafe car of course). I am sure they exist on *certain trains* on the NEC, but I don't see that regularly.

great shot Mitch as always ... you posed another photo just like it not too long ago i believe of an Acela on the bridge IIRC ... the Perryville bridge no longer opens ... there use to be a track and signal maintenance crew whose sole purpose was to open the bridge on weekends so a guy west of the bridge with a high masted sail boat could head to the Chesapeake Bay ... he was a stubborn SOB ... Amtrak for years tried to make an agreement with him to relocate his boat to the Bay side of the bridge ... i don't what happened but he finally relented and did relocate his sail boat to the bay side and now the bridge is permanently closed ... another tidbit: that spot right there is a great place for Striper fishing in the wee hours of the morning before the sun comes up

A perfect passenger rail shot -- a combination of current, operating equipment in a unique section of the running, highlighting the beauty of nature as it can be enjoyed through train travel. Thanks

Your story about the "stubborn SOB" is correct, but it was the Bush River bridge, not the Susquehanna bridge. Amtrak had to open the draw span twice a day on Saturdays and Sundays during the boating season. They had to bring a Burro crane to lift the CWR strings so the span could open.

That span is now sealed, and neither the Gunpowder nor the Bush River bridges opens for boats any longer. I believe the Susquehanna draw span is still active (there's a barge building firm up the Susquehanna a short distance).

Outstanding. Proof once again that there is more magic in the railroad than in any dozen other industries combined.

Thanks all! Just be happy there was no audio, lol.

The sun was setting faster then sand in an hour
glass and Amtrak trains seemed few and far between.

I tried this shot a week back - ISO 400, then 800,
then 1250, 2000, 2500 - d'oh! I think daylight
savings time saved the day.

So Mitch, what was the ISO setting of this shot?

Thanks in advance,

Rob L.

This one was ISO 200 at 1/1250th f 6.3 at 5:30 PM.

Last week, I had to wait for this train at 6:30 PM
before daylight savings time and was at ISO 4000
at 1/400th at f 4.0. I think my ISO was at 640
initially but by the time Amtrak sent something my
way... Light sure fades fast.
