Must have been a problem with #19 itself as #85 left at 7:14 pm (14" LT due to late inbound arrival) and #97 left OT at 7:30 pm.

19 was delayed at WAS by a mechanical issue

It was definitely a mechanical issue. Diner 8524 which has been a repeater with wheel issues and upon inspection was set out in Washington with 2 and 1/2 inch flat spots and supposedly came all the way down the road from New York in this condition.

Sometimes what makes it out of Sunnyside amazes me...

Wonder if WAS was able to scrounge up a replacement food service car, or if the passengers had to make due with just the lounge beyond WAS?

Wonder if they could have done a "rob Peter to pay Paul" with perhaps the northbound Silver Star's Diner. More than likely it already left Washington DC. Otherwise, I would imagine the Amfleet II Lounge (aka Diner Lite) was pressed into service.

Yes, it is always amazing as to what leaves Sunnyside and even Chicago in what condition.

And there are a few extra Heritage Diners at Sunnyside where this train set did NOT have to leave with this particular Heritage Dining Car. Amtrak overhauled 3 spare Heritage Diners once they put Heritage Diners back on the Lake Shore. ANd now that the Viewliner Diner is subbing in, that gives them one more. And there are still Heritage Diners in storage at Beech Grove - should Amtrak need them. The Heritage Diners should have NEVER been retired off of the Cardinal trainset, but that's another story unto itself.

PLUS Sunnyside Yard had nearly 24 hours to assess this train set when it arrived as #20 and would be turned for #19. Reliability at its best......
