Train 4(4)
Author: GenePoon

...Out of Newton 326pm, 12 hr 27 min late.

Expected in Topeka any minute now.

The train is on track to arrive Chicago around 300am.

Maybe this will all work out better than just a few hours late, anyway.
For passengers connecting to Milwaukee, Detroit and Carbondale and intermediate
points, Amtrak won't have to call for buses. The passengers will enjoy a
fun-filled ride on a train, instead. Should make 'em all happy.

Yeh...sure...

An hour late out of LA for unknown reasons. Fuel leak in one of the Amtrak locomotives took 2+ hours to repair at Fullerton, then air problems near Victorville resulted in obtaining a BNSF locomotive to act as lead unit in Barstow). After the second delay they needed to be dogcatched, which exacerbated the delay even more, plus running at reduced speed due to the freight locomotive.......

Such lateness reminds me of a trip on #5 more than a few years ago, from Chicago to Salt Lake City. A variety of mishaps (leaf fire under one car, stuck turnout at one CP, etc.) put us down by 2 hours by the time we got out of Burlington, Iowa. Overnight we did not fare much better, and left Denver down by about 4 hours. The Onboard Service supervisor, noting that I seem to not be too put-out by the delays (I was in sleeper, I was not in a hurry, and being in a good mood seemed much better than the alternative) asked if there was anything she could do for me as we slowly lost time. Thanking her for her offer, I said most of all I would prefer our getting later so I could arrive in Salt Lake City around 8am (as opposed to the 11pm scheduled arrival, and the 3 am arrival Julie was predicting for us). She personally woke me up at about 7am when we were about an hour out of SLC so I could get breakfast before arriving, adding "I like to fulfill our passengers' wishes."

Nothing beats the 39 1/2 hours late I experienced once on the Canadian, or 15 hours on United Airlines, with most of the delay sitting on the plane.

Oops! It happened again. 3(6) is 2 hours late out of CHI. Reason? Motive power failure on departure,
methinks. Road and terminal failures seem to be out of control. What is the bad order ratio? We'll
never know.......

#21 has been late out of Chicago many days over the past few weeks.

Well, here are some of my shots of it around Topeka this afternoon. Boy, that seems weird to type. This train typically hits the area when its dark out, but today, it hit the "wrong" part of darkness here; dusk instead of dawn...

Photos 1-2: Down at mp59, just south of Pauline, KS at 77th St.
Photo 3: Looking west off of the Goodell Rd. overpass on the east side of town.

Man, I would be MMMMMAAAAAADDDDDD if I were on this train.

I can imagine that, but a daylight run across the Mojave on a very late No. 3? No thanks!

Interestingly, they have already made up over half the time and probably will be into LAX early tomorrow.

Well, they've got about an hour of schedule padding at KC, so that should explain that. Not sure about anything out west.
