Passenger Trains > Starlight sunset at ElkhornDate: 05/13/13 22:24 Starlight sunset at Elkhorn Author: walstib Here's today's Coast Starlight.
It was running about 30 minutes late and hit the light just right at Elkhorn Slough. Amazingly, there was no cloud cover. Date: 05/13/13 22:36 Re: Starlight sunset at Elkhorn Author: pdt any pix of the whole train?

Tony Date: 05/14/13 10:25 Re: Starlight sunset at Elkhorn Author: chakk A busy train, what with 3 full sleepers plus the trans-dorm sleeper on the front end.
Date: 05/14/13 13:35 Re: Starlight sunset at Elkhorn Author: Phil1 I recall days in the 1980s when it had only 2 sleepers and an up to 6 coaches with one dropped at Oakland. Many times the OAK coach was an ex Santa Fe High level from the old El Cap days. The one issue with a 12 or 13 car train was that the lounge attendant and all of the dinning car folks were really worked hard and service was sometimes a bit sow due to crowds.
On the these trains there was no Parlor Car service for sleeping car passengers and there was a second baggage car now and then. This was in the pre P-42 days so some trips saw three engines. The sleepers ran up front behind the dorm car which then was an Ex Santa Fe High level with 32 seats and the crew sleeping rooms. It was the old "10" car and was used sparingly for overflow because the sleeper attendant in the 31 car helped out in there as much as possible with pillows for those folks stuck in there. In the last few years the Starlight's consist has been more "consistent" with a Sightseer Lounge occasionally subbing for the Ex Santa Fe Car for the Parlor Car. It is one of Amtrak's best trips although all long distance trains really sport some wonderful viewing no matter which train you ride. We lost the lead in Oakland due to power problems.
