Extra Cars on wb Lake Shore
Author: twropr

Heard #49 go by the DED at Palatine Bridge, NY, reporting 78 axles. If two locomotives, that would be 17 cars (including one with 6 axles). Will be interested to hear from anyone who actually sees the train.
Thanks!

Not sure which train they're coming in on, but Boardman is headed to Pueblo, CO... I would assume, based on past practice, he'll head to Chicago on train 30. After that he is headed to Denver on 5 then a special move Sunday (7/28/2013) to Pueblo, CO. The Pueblo move will be 2 P42's, Pacific Cape, a Viewliner, Great Dome, and Beech Grove.

Great Dome 10031 has been on the Adirondack this week. Is it headed to Chicago on 49 as we speak ? Is that the 6-axle car ?

Why are they going to Pueblo, Co for? How did Amtrak find extra Viewliner?

With 11 Viewliners in reserve at a given time (only 39 are required for service), it shouldn't be that hard to find just ONE! Amtrak can find'em when they want!

Is he going to check up on the new electric motor's status and test performance. Seems more like a business fleet heading out than "test cars!"

Why don't they keep an extra Viewliner in Boston so when the assigned car craps out, passengers aren't out of luck.

Stop making sense.
Actually, best to keep a ready-to-spare in Chicago, where 3 to 4 of them are turned back east each day, where Boston-bound sleeper passengers have been known to get a Horizon car sub'd.

where are the 11 reserve viewliners stored?

Miami would seem like a logical place for Amtrak, since that's the service base for many (all?) of them

Saw #49 go by the Chesterton, IN video came at 11:07 am EDT on TK 1. Had 17 cars, which included the Viewliner, diner, Great Dome and Beech Grove. Too bad the paying passengers don't get to ride on an open platform obs like the Prez does.

Looks like Boardman and Company got to see #49's crappy timekeeping like it really is : lost about an hour and a half from Albany to Buffalo, and cannot make it up into Chicago despite padding into Cleveland and Chicago.

Arrived: 1 hour and 42 minutes late.
