I would admire this gentleman, but are you all sure he supports Amtrak?

Only on the Northeast Corridor. Like Mica.

Is there a NEC in California, Gene?

Good for him. Not all Republicans are "evil" as often portrayed on TO.

Isn't this the guy who's doing everything possible to derail CA HSR?

Not only that, but he wants to send the Federal money to the East, which ought to PO his constituents.

Hardly---many of his constituents are central valley growers who are very much against the HSR project and its potential effect on agriculture. However, he used to be one of our politicians here in the Salinas area and we never considered him to be one of the sharpest knives in the drawer.

I'm curious... What is the expected "effect on agriculture" if HSR is built? I live in the Central Valley, but haven't seen any detail... Just that often-repeated talking point.

You sure give this guy a lot of publicity on TO when there are other politicians who do much more for regional and intercity passenger rail.

If ACE riders want to play the same political games Washington D.C. do, they'd pretend to like and support him, then vote for someone else come election time.

Too bad there are too many honest people in the world. :-)

The Central Valley growers are anti HSR. But the reconstruction of State Rt. 99 is gobbling up way more land than HSR. No one has said a word about this. I have a feeling that the antis are more political than anything else. Otherwise why would they not care about a highway but go to pieces about a railroad? I drove up 99 today and saw all of their anti HSR signs and the huge swath of farmland destruction caused by the highway reconstruction.

99 is an existing ROW which has already set the access issues for growers for many years and whatever widening or whatever they are doing has already set the parameters for the growers who reside by it. .. The HSR would blaze a whole new path across farmland causing a whole new set of access issues and compounding the problem.
Much easier to modify what you have (i.e. 99) than deal with a whole new set of problems with a whole new ROW of HSR.

Check out north of Madera. Its a whole new right of way-not just widening. Couple of hundred yards wide.

That's right, the bypasses they are building (mostly done now) are on new ROW's, but also the Freeway is used to transport the crops to market, not so with the HSR...

Denham was the one who sponsoted the pets on trains bill in Congress. So he is trying to boost ridership in one small way.

Yes there was a name change. The goal is for ACE to get corridor monies. Stacey Mortnesen is building an empire there - they have the San Joaquin JPA Managing Agency contract, there's ACE, and also feeder service to HSR from Sacramento if that ever gets going.
