Thanks for the great shots. I think you might consider augmenting your digital camera lightmeter with a hand-held lightmeter under yesterday's lighting conditions. About what time did #11 pass the great Tehachapi sign?

Great shots for those of us who couldn't make the trip to get our own, with or without a handheld light meter.

The guy in the flower/print shirt on the back of Tioga Pass---that's why I NEVER take these trips. You gotta take turns back there----not hog the same spot the entire way. I say this only because he's in every picture at every location. I'm sure someone else might have enjoyed coming out back and not having it crowded. I just can't do these trips any more---too many people.

Great series! I had the good fortune to do these detours several times, once aboard the Silver Solarium. Two things strike me. One is how sad it is that these trips seem to have become old hat. I remember the excitement of riding the Gunn special #11 thinking it was "once in a lifetime". Second is the air quality! I recently moved home to New Mexico after living in Bakersfield for 25 years. I really, really, REALLY don't miss that awful air. Yuk.

TC great shots. I gave a couple of your dark images a little kicker in Photoshop. In this age of pixels its pretty hard to screw up on exposure and when it happens you can usually fix it. I really like that last going away shot.

VERY nice photos, tc! Thanks so much for chasing it,
and posting these here. Even without PS, thsoe last
2 shots look great!

Photobob: Thanks for fixing those underexposed shots.
IT is amazing what can be done with PhotoShop

I, too, rode the "Gunn special"in 2005, That was FUN --
and almost no other pax on the train, as there was very
little notice that it was actually going to happen. We
found out about it only3 days before it was going to happen!
On Thursday, Silagi posted here on TO that it was going to
happen, and it ran on Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005.

I hope people don't get too blase about these wonderful
detours. Who knows how long they will be allowed, or
how long any particular Amtrak long-distance train will
be around?
Ride 'em while you can!
