Opening Day 2014 on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad
Author: SDP40F600

It was "highball" for the first time in 2014 on Saturday on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad in Northeastern Ohio. The first train departed Peninsula at 9:05 a.m. and arrived back there shortly after 5 p.m. after making a pair of roundtrips between Akron and Brecksville.

The CVSR is not operating to Rockside Road station (suburban Cleveland) during the winter. Between now and March 10, the CVSR will operate on weekends only between Akron and Brecksville with an intermediate stop at Peninsula.

Starting on May 22, the trains will operate only between Akron and Peninsula with no intermediate stops. On May 3, the CVSR will reopen all stations and resume its Bike Aboard! service. Service will be on weekends only through May 25.

Tourist only?? if that is the correct designation but does carry a good amount of people and is
owned?? or part of the National Park Service so pretty high standards would be expected.

When does the service between Akron and Canton begin?

The track between Akron and Independence is owned by the National Park Service and the CVSR is the sole user between those points. The Park Service has poured millions into rebuilding the track -- which it purchased from Chessie System to keep it from being abandoned, including laying welded rail, rebuilding bridges and making other improvements. Park Service funding has proven highly beneficial in the past when flooding washed out portions of the track.

The track continues from Independence into Cleveland and is owned by CSX. The CVSR does not operate over that portion of the line (ex-B&O) although it did during the Chessie ownership days.

Just beyond the Akron CVSR station, the track is owned by Akron Metro, which purchased it from CSX to keep it from being abandoned. Akron Metro wanted to save it for possible commuter train use. The Wheeling & Lake Erie on occasion uses part of the track owned by Akron Metro.

As for Akron-Canton service, it was cut to once a month last summer and even that was suspended before summer's end because the agreement between CVSR and Akron Metro for the former to use the track had expired. I do not know the status of renewal of the agreement, so I can't say when or if the Canton service will return.

Snow has been and miss in n/e OH this year. Some places have had pretty good snowfalls, others haven't. Here in Willoughby, I don't think we've had a snowfall over three inches, and we're snowbelt. Our turn will come :)

Nice pics, SDP, thanks for posting. - Jerry
