Of "Chiefs" & "Illini"...
Author: aussiehinz

With the high frequency of train movements here at "MH" Tower, opportunities for photographs with multiple trains occur quite often. Still, things have to unfold just right for something like this to occur. Up top, Amtrak Train #393, the "Illini" to Carbondale IL, climbs the St. Charles Air Line heading for the Chicago River Drawbridge, while down below, on BNSF's Chicago Subdivision, Amtrak Train #4, the "Southwest Chief" turns its equipment after arrival a bit earlier in the afternoon.

Cheers,

Thank you for your posts. I am a big Amtrak fan but don't get down to the tracks due work schedules.

Take care,

Tony R.

I see Unit #15 has the ATS Shoe. But the trailing unit and the unit on Train #393 doesn't have the Shoe.

how many Amtrak Units have the ATS Shoes on them?

Amtrak only attaches the ATS pickups on the lead locomotives/cab carsĀ of trains that traverse ATS controlled territory, which at this time is only the Southwest Chief routeĀ and the California Surfline. Trains on the Surfline only use the system south of Los Angeles to San Diego but the equipment keeps the pickups on them even going north to Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo to avoid having to attach them later on in the trip.

If you note the dates of the original pictures were from over two years ago (4/2014), the newer baggage cars were still a long way from being delivered.
