Passenger Trains > Iowa Pacific Dome on Amtrak #6(14)Date: 04/16/14 09:14 Iowa Pacific Dome on Amtrak #6(14) Author: Agent The eastbound California Zephyr heading to Chicago today has one of Iowa Pacific's full-length dome cars on the end. I didn't catch the name of this one though. Amtrak #6(14) came through Agency, Iowa on the left track to pass some maintenance projects, and it was running about one hour and ten minutes late.

Don't see any markings so might be fresh out of the Alamosa shop to be painted in the Chicago area. [Edit: The link shows what they looked like coming from Holland America and used on the Arizona Eastern before IP sold that RR. Notice that the unit has what I think are air conditioning units on top of the car. The pictures in the current thread do not show them so the A/C units may have been replaced or redesigned. http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?4,2479130,2479820#msg-2479820 ] Edited 1 time(s). Was added Sunday night in Oakland, CA Coach Yard. Matt Date: 04/16/14 14:14 Re: Iowa Pacific Dome on Amtrak #6(14) Author: Cumbresfan Matt - Thanks for the correction. Are the ugly A/C units gone or are they hidden because of the photo angle? They looked awfully big in the other photos at my three-year old link.
[p.s. Are there markings on the car? Not obvious from the photo(s)] Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/16/14 14:16 by Cumbresfan. Date: 04/16/14 14:26 Re: Iowa Pacific Dome on Amtrak #6(14) Author: HoggerMatt Cumbresfan Wrote:

It had reporting marks on the side and pretty sure it said Iowa Pacific on the side. Date: 04/16/14 14:45 Re: Iowa Pacific Dome on Amtrak #6(14) Author: bwyrick Most of the A/C units atop the domes were removed over the last few years. Looks like it could be SLRG 554. Can't tell exactly without a closer shot. If you look closely, you can see brown lettering in the orange just above the gold stripe on the hooked side of the car in pic 1.

I didn't look at it too hard when we tied it on to the train in the Oakland Yard. Dark paint is a heat sink and can actually raise the interior temps by several degrees, an important consideration, especially for a dome car. Santa Fe had a reason for embracing stainless steel cars besides aesthetics.

The stainless steel is all messed up from painting the cars. Either pre-painting rough up or messed up from paint removal. I'm guessing pre-painting. Not the good looking stainless finish we are used to seeing. I missed it yesterday here in Rocklin and have not seen images anywhere on TO
