Chris -- the latest sunset happens a week after Summer Solstice.

You didn't say when you took this trip, but if it was yesterday, sunset in Elko, NV was a full minute later than on solstice itself: 8:19 vs. 8:18. FWIW.

Nice pics, thanks for sharing.

(BTW, where is 231 these days? I just rolled by the new museum tonight, everything looks good, but I miss the more extensive collection of rolling stock that was featured at the Brooklyn Roundhouse).

Did Winnemucca get a station rebuild??

When I passed through 10 years ago, it was a dusty bus shelter. Your photo seems to indicate a nice structure and a re poured platform. Looks very inviting!

Those foamers in Elmira need something to do and work on their hobby more. (Hey there, Digger.)

The VTA cars are getting rebuilt, but slowly. None have been released to RT Metro yet. Siemens has the contract.

This segment was first weekend of June.

Ogden, UT. Someone just posted pics of it there the other day, check out http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,3449011

I wondered if anyone would recognize them. :)

Interesting! Sacramento seems to have enough cars in operation, so would these rebuilt vehicles supplement route extensions?

It does -- but ONLY IF you restrict the passage of time to minutes and hours.

Mother Nature doesn't work like that. She takes it several time increments deeper. After the Summer Solstice, the days imperceptibly grow shorter, but at the rate of micro-seconds, milli-seconds, and whole seconds until a minute has elapsed.

Awesome photos and trip report. I took the Cal Zephyr back in April from Emeryville to Denver. It was a fantastic ride and arrived Denver only an hour late

Sac RT is in the process of rehabbing and repainting a few of these to run on the Gold Line. I've caught one being towed behind a hi-rail truck late one night to check line clearances a few months back, and saw a picture of it wrapped in RT's scheme the other day. They'll be out on the rails soon.

A exceptionally well done series. Thank you for your work in getting this out. It's this type of thing that keeps me on Trainorders.

True, the days are shorter after summer solstice. But the latest sunset occurs a week after solstice, and the earliest sunrise is a week before solstice.

So if you're talking about evening sun, the latest sunset is on June 27th, even though the longest day (in minutes between dawn and dusk) is the 20th.

Here's a sciency article about it. http://earthsky.org/tonight/at-midnorthern-latitudes-latest-sunsets-of-the-year-in-late-june

p.s. glad to hear the 231 is doing well, I'll make a point of stopping by next time I'm in the state. It's been a couple years since I last saw the collection there.

I was going to ask the same question. When I boarded the CZ there in 1991 their was barely a yellow line and no shelter. We had to ask in the Bar across the street where Amtrak stopped.

Yes, the Winnemucca Amtrak station was rebuilt a few years ago.
