Picture Request - F59PHi Back to Back
Author: myjbh1989

Hello Gentleman (and ladies),

I'm looking for a picture of a pair of F59s in a back to back configuration. On an heads up email list, we were talking about different configurations we've seen on the Surfliner consists.

What we don't have evidence of is a pair put back to back.

Any photo evidence of such an occurrence?

I saw back to back 59's once moving around in Oakland Yard- two of the 2000's in Caltrans colors. But no photos, and I'm not 100% sure they were out on the road that way. Sure looked cool enough!

How is this? Not exactly a regular "in-service" Surfliner set though.

...should turn this one into a "where-iz-it"...

Very nice! Exactly what I was looking for.

On a related (but not really) question:

Whenever 1761/1790 has PVs added, they usually add an f59 to the south end and have a p42 on the north end. Every time I see this setup, the P42 is providing hotel power. Since the f59 has separate hep powerplant, why is the p42 used? If the f59 was providing power, there would be no reduction in horsepower by the p42 being speed locked at 900 rpm. The cabin on the p42 would also be far quieter, right? In addition to reduced wayside noise.

Is it an issue of not wanting to run the load of the entire train via the PV car wiring?

Enquiring mind thanks you,

John

Ha! I can finally play one of these! Those locomotives are sitting on track one in the coach yard at the Grand Canyon Railway yard in Williams, AZ. What on earth where they doing there?!

I have a pic of 2 F59s on the head end of a Cpaitol Corridor train. I think they were back to back, but may have just been elephant style. At any rate, I thought they looked pretty striking, reminiscent of F units. & the Cap Corridor livery really plays up the F unit appearance. (a step up from the Surfliner photos already posted).

I'll post them to this thread if I ever find them. Might take 6 months or a year.

Ted in OR

(BTW, back to back is rare on the Capitol Corridor, since engines always point toward San Jose in regular service. Double headers are not particularly unusual, but an engine pointed toward Sacramento is what makes this configuration particularly rare on the CC. And probably all other regional train cabcar operations, as is generally the use, nationwide, for F59s)

I did a google search of the trainorders.com site and found these -- all on the Coast Starlight, thought, not on any actual Surfliners.

Evan Werkema got a Cascades and Surfliner back to back in 2002.

& here's a couple Capitol Corridor doubleheaders, you can see that the f59s look pretty good in pairs in this livery.
