While I don't know where you particular photos were taken, the Los Angeles Metro light rail lines use these white "position light signal" or "digital semaphore" to govern train operations while on street trackage. I imagine other light rail lines use the same system.

I've seen signals like that in Baltimore, too.

Yes, they are on the Howard Street "street running"
section of the light rail line. It starts at about
the old B & O Mt. Royal Station and ends at Pratt
Street near Camden Yards. However, those photos
were not taken in Baltimore, MD.

I suspect these photos might have been taken on the New Jersey Transit River Line in the Camden NJ area. We'll have to wait for the author to confirm.

I agree; the traffic signal mounts look very New Jersey to me.

this will answer your questions ... i followed the Tooterville Trolley from Cooper St to Riverside Dr formerly Delaware Ave where P-RSL street trackage, to Cooper's Point yard, on cobblestone lay to switch the very important consignees of Campbell Soup and RCA among a few smaller other ones ... there's a signal in every photo sans 1

Photo #1 heading west on Cooper St

Photo #2 turning south onto Riverside Dr

Photo #3 making the stop for the Camden Aquarium heading for the end of the line at the Susquehanna Bank Center ... the station at the end of the line is in the area where the old P-RSL roundhouse once stood

the last photo is from Clinton St and is the south end of NJT's River Line ... the rear of the CTE(Camden Terminal Enginehouse) roundhouse stood right at this spot

Please tell us the meaning of each.

My guess would be vertical - go, horizontal - stop, diagonal - slow. Correct?

it's hooked up to the street light signal to avoid conflict between vehicles and the LRVs ... when the street signal is green the River Line signal is in the horizontal stop position and vice versa with the diagonal on the yellow but unlike a street light signal that goes green yellow red ... these signals horizontal-diagonal-vertical then they go from vertical-DIAGONAL-horizontal

So the vehicle lights must be red in all four directions before LRV's can go through a signaled intersection??
