New ties for Metrolink in San Juan Capistrano CA?
Author: Kimball

I took the old road instead of I-5 down to SJC this weekend. There were many large stacks of new wooden ties between Laguna Niguel and the SJC station. They are south of CP Avery, but before the bridge on the north end of SJC.

It looks to me like all the ties and track in this area are in great condition, so does anybody know why the new ties are here? No pictures, just passing by...

Uh, no they wouldn't. Creosote is an approved wood preservative as per the State of California.
It's not a hazard until you burn it. Which is why used railroad ties and telephone poles are now considered hazardous waste.

There is a plan to add a second main track between Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo and the north side of the Trabuco Creek bridge. There is information on the project at the OCTA web site.

Thanks for the OCTA tip! I looked at the webite, it says construction to start in 2016? Seems the ties might be well-seasoned by then?
