ENID ALVAREZ/NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Three men were injured in a knife attack at Grand Central Terminal early Saturday after a fight broke out on an uptown No. 6 train, police said.

Three men were stabbed and slashed at Grand Central Terminal just after midnight on Saturday, leaving one in critical condition.

Cops say an intoxicated man pulled a knife on the three victims after a fight broke out on an uptown No. 6 train. One man was stabbed in the chest, another was slashed in the arm and a third victim was slashed across the stomach during the melee, authorities said

This is in the Lexington Ave. IRT subway station, not the railroad station.

Thank you for the clarification.

Indeed, so many people misidentify Grand Central Terminal as Grand Central Station, but in this case, Grand Central Station would have been correct.

I'm confused. The railroad station is Grand Central Terminal, not Grand Central Station. The article stated Grand Central Terminal. Though the stabbing didn't happen in the concourse, it happened at the subway station located at Grand Central Terminal and is known as Grand Central -- 42nd Street.

So where does Grand Central Station come from?

Sloppy usage, I think. If you look at the photo in the article, it says "42nd St.--Grand Central." To engage in intensive deconstruction, one could argue that because it is a subway station, it is "42nd St.--Grand Central Station," but the railroad station above is Grand Central Terminal.

I had previously understood that "Grand Central Station" referred to the post office next to Grand Central Terminal.

It also can refer to the subway station, though in that case I'd be inclined to write it as Grand Central station, with a lower case S.

By that logic you could say Grand Central Terminal station.

The knifing isn't getting a lot of coverage on TV. The local media is fascinated with the "knockout game" wherein one or two young men come up on a pedestrian, usually from behind. They punch him out, the objective is to knock him or her out cold with a single punch.

There have been quite a few incidents, with a 30 year old pregnant woman the most recent victim.

Back in the good old days, Chicago was the home of Grand Central Station, a stub end facility owned by B&O and used by Soo Line, Chi Great Western and Pere Marquette (later C&O) in addition to B&O trains. It was closed in the late 1960s and demolished in 1971.

It was an outstanding piece of architecture, but preservation efforts failed.

I believe the original 1871 station was called Grand Central Depot. The second station on the site, in about 1900, was called Grand Central Station. When NYC opened the station in use today, it called it Grand Central Terminal.

Any another on Saturday afternoon at Lex & 59th :

Two thugs slashed a man with a box cutter in a bustling Midtown subway station Saturday afternoon, authorities said.
The toughs cut the 23-year-old victim’s face, chest, and arm at 4:10 p.m. near the uptown 6 train platform in the Lexington Avenue/59th Street station, according to cops.
The bloodied victim told MTA workers that the duo tried to rob him, and pulled the knife when he refused to hand over any cash.
“We asked him what happened and he said two guys tried to rob him,” one worker told the Post. “They tried to shake him down. They asked him for money, and he said he didn’t have any, but they cut him anyway.”
Police could not immediately confirm that the incident was a robbery gone wrong, instead characterizing it as a “dispute.”
The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.
The assailants fled.

There's a perception that there are fewer NYPD officers in the subways than they used to be. It's pretty evident in the subways at night. Used to be that you would ALWAYS see an officer on the platform, etc. That's nowhere near as frequent.

Sure miss Hizzoner Giuliani and NYPD Commish Kelly, who eventually cleaned up David Dinkens' pre-Obama messes?
What does commissar/mayor DeBlasio have to say?

Kelly served both under both Dinkens (bad era) and Bloomberg (good era)
Bratton started the improvements and reforms for Guiliani, who he fired to take the credit. Now he is back.
You can't correlate crime levels with the Commissioner.

I'd agree with the last sentence, but note that during Dinkins' administration, robberies, fights, and shootings in the subway were rampant. Graffiti also. And, the Crown Heights pogroms ("kill the Jews" and all that) took place under Dinkins and Kelly. The mayor's policy was mobs would be tolerated, and they were.

Later, Guiliani and Bratton correctly understood that frisking apprehended turnstile jumpers, subway spitters, etc would get guns out of the subway. People without guns would do less damage to each other and bystanders when they messed it up. Focusing stop and frisk on high crime neighborhoods would get guns out of waistbands and easy reach.

Just to add that the NYC subway is a very safe place. I was a daily rider, and still use the subway a few times each month. In Manhattan and in Brooklyn. You're in much more danger of tripping on a stairs etc than getting knifed or stabbed, or killed in a pogrom.
