Amtrak Phase IV Dash-8s...
Author: judahrice

I have a question concerning the current condition of the Amtraks phase 4 P32BWH locomotives: How many of these units are still in Phase IV paint, and which ones are they?

As far as i know, #s 509, and 519, both are still in this scheme, while #518, was repainted to whatever the new scheme is called. Also, a list of where each dash-8 (500-519) is assigned to currently, would be helpful!

Thanks!

Aren't there two P32 units assigned to the Pennsylvanian pool?

512, 513, and 514 are all assigned to NEC/PH Line.....since they are cab signal equipped. 514 is Phase V. Currently, 512 and 514 are on the Pennsylvanian, and the 513 is the HAR protect unit.

All started out in the pepsi-can scheme, but 501 and 502 went directly into AmCal colors without passing thru any other national Amtrak paintvariations. I am not sure if the original pepsi was applied at Erie or at Juniata. I belive all subsequent national Amtrak repaints have taken place at Beech Grove.

Amazingly, none of this group have been scrapped at this point, and all but one I believe are still in daily service. Several run long-distance on the Coast Starlight almost every day, and on Florida trains as needed to shuttle back and forth between terminals or to fill in for ailing P40's on the Autotrain. The rest generally are on yard duty.

Geoff's Amtrak Locomotive Notes is pretty complete up through 2009 or so. I believe only 506 and 518 have been repainted since he stopped updating his list. 500 did have the biodiesel sticker on it for a while during an EPA sponsored test on the Heartland Flyer.

The 514 has been assigned to the Pennsylvanian for quite some time. Here's a shot of it on the east bound Pennsylvanian passing OOS Alto Tower a couple weeks ago

I believe 508 is typically a switcher as well for the Auto Train.

The # 500 replaced the # 519 two weeks ago as the San Antonio, TX switcher.

Thanks for that update. I did not know San Antonio had a switcher, so that is good info.

I wouldn't know why they would even need one at this point since trains 1 and 2 do not interchange cars or split with the Eagle anymore.

I wonder what is at New Orleans now, if anything?

These two:

501 Amtrak California Scheme renumbered #2051
502 Amtrak California Scheme renumbered #2052

were purchased new by Caltrans. Painted in Atk colors like the rest of the 500s, with Caltrans decals on both sides of the fronts, this paint job was was short lived because they were renumbered and repainted shortly after the first group of CTDX F-59s arrived. They've never been owned by Atk, but about 12 years ago Caltrans paid Atk to convert them EFI. AFAIK, Atk's 500s still have governors, load regulators, and layshafts, unless Atk has started a program for conversion.
