Do u have a computer (haha). it took me 21.376 seconds to go to wikipedia and find that the IC crosses the PRR in effingham, IL

Ex-PRR. Part of CSX's Indianapolis to St. Louis main. From Indianapolis to Terra Haute, Conrail kept the former NYC trackage and down graded the parallel PRR. West of Terra Haute the old PRR was kept and the NYC largely abandon.

Way to kill a discussion. Other people might not have even thought to ask the question, but nonetheless been interested in the answer. If the original poster had merely looked it up on Wikipedia then none of us would have been any the wiser. I'll give you some points for providing the answer, but not for the lesson in using a computer. If you were a true nob then you'd have left it at just the first sentence and without the haha.

The station once hosted a connection between Amtrak's City of New Orleans and National Limited but it was several hours. I'm too lazy to look it up but New Orleans to St. Louis had you wait from around dawn til midafternoon. There was no Amtrak staffing but there was an operator controlling the interlocking, and MofW stationed there.

Eventual high speed link between Indianapolis and Chicago will probably have to pass through here.

Be careful with Wikipedia. The entries can be changed. We never allowed that site to be used in any term papers. Only saying.

For basic facts, it's usually accurate, and Trainorders is not a graded term paper or a published work, either. If one wants to be careful, it's usually possible to check one of Wiki's cited links for original source material -- that's where the site becomes useful for more formal research.

That's a good way of putting it. If everything else fails--library reference materials, my own library and journals--I sometimes look at Wikipedia to see if there is something, but only as reference to primary sources, which must then be examined and vetted on their own merits.

Oh Please! If u want to contribute, take a picture at Effingham, do a minute of research, and ask for the history.
IMHO, asking an easily answerable question is just being lazy. but i digress

But in this response I do not digress. Any member of this board (and we all make the choice to join, and we all pay for the privilege) should have the option to ask the question here if we choose to do so. Simple, midrange, complex. You pays your money, you get to ask.

I am far more bothered by responses like yours, and others in the vein of telling me that Google or other online resources are my friend (which often basically boils down to, "Please don't bother us"), than I am by someone asking even a basic question, no matter in how few seconds the response could be found off this site.

One of the things I've enjoyed most as a railfan through the years was the opportunity to help spark the interest of others in railroading. I have long lost count (as I am quite sure is the case for very many of us) in how many hundreds of times I have answered the most elementary questions about railroading from the greenest neophyte, and done it with pleasure and satisfaction.

Maybe that's why I have had a long and successful career as an educator, from secondary-level education, to research librarianship, to training adult professionals in complex software and processes in the information technology field. But I would hope that every one if us on this board would see this site as a place of learning and encouragement of interest.

Nobody here should ever feel unwelcome to ask any question about railroading. And we all should also feel that this is a place where we can enjoy the company of others who share our interest, and where we all can learn, grow in our knowledge and have some fun together. That's my view, personally and professionally.

The station is currently owned by the city. I don't know when they acquired it. I had permission from the town manager when I videotaped at Effingham including all night in 2004. At that time the station wasn't open but a caretaker showed up for the Illinois supported trains. And yes that is a way to kill a discussion.

Effingham was one of those locations I loved to visit in the 80s and 90s. It was a location best visited when I could overnight nearby and be at the diamonds at daybreak, usually fairly busy.

Pardon this thread stroll to the nostalgia board content-wise.

Effingham is the crossing of the former PRR line from Terre Haute (not Terra) line to East St Louis with the former IC line from Chicago to New Orleans.
