AAPRCO Special - On Board Photos from PV Dearing
Author: jberlin

At Royalston MA 9:30am

Photo 1. Lot's of photographers. They're everywhere! Note the special white flags on the lead locomotive.

Photo 2. Rare view of most of the cars. With 26 cars and 3 locomotives, it's a long train (about a half mile long).

Doesn't a white flag mean this train is running as an "extra"?

You are apparently being delayed by following two Pan Am freights, EDPO and 22K (no surprise!). Plus 22K had to lend EDPO an engine to get up the grade to Gardner. So I'd guess (hope) you'll arrive Ayer between 11:30 and noon.

It's nice to see the young railfan, photographers. It's also fun to see the "Extra" flags on the lead locomotive. Looks like a fun trip.

Yes and since this is not a scheduled Amtrak train it is an "extra".

I didn't even know they had a mount for sticking a flag on them.

The three day AAPRCO Convention in Portland will host a series of meetings and speakers including representatives from Amtrak, Ringling Brothers, Chef Geoffrey Boardman, and Extreme Trains TV Host Matt Brown. Convention activities will also include optional trips on the Maine Eastern Railroad, Seashore Trolley Museum and a cruise down Casco Bay on the Pied Piper.

Here is the Dearing about to cross Walker Rd on the east end of Shirley, MA on the approach to Ayer, MA. Hope you guys weren't in a hurry!

Out of curiosity, for whom/what is Dearing named?

The PV Dearing is named after William E. Dearing, founder of the Georgia Railroad.

Yes, it was quite a chase. Sometimes a bit tough to find a place to stand, but people were generally cooperative. That's me on the far left in the white shirt.

Is this you, Kevin?
