Actually this is US Highway 421, media reports seem to call it a state highway.

Passengers bussed around 11AM. Train, with engine #154 with nose smashed. Short backup move took place around 10:30 local time to get passengers transferred to the bus at road crossing. Then a longer backup move to Brookston where apparently Cardinal will pick up the equipment Tuesday night for a run back to Beech Grove.

Cement truck. This is adjacent to the new magnetation steel plant facility. Haven't heard yet if it was related to Magnetation. They've been under construction for a couple years, but the plant went on line over the summer. A couple of sets of raw material trains coming in from Chicago this month, and finished product going to Kentucky. usually BNSF power on those.

Logic would have dictated some improvements in the road crossings given the increase in heavy truck traffic. Some signal improvements have been recently made around Reynolds, and there is a new siding u/c by CSX up north, but doubt any thought was given to upgrading the crossings.

The crossing is protected by crossbucks only.

For eastbound traffic such as the suspect tractor-trailer, visibility
of the tracks in both directions is unobstructed.

Photos from the scene show no obstructing fog or mist.

Unfortunately, you have to have a brain too.

The Lafayette Journal and Courier has a few photos of the crash; go to their site at: jconline.com.

Rich

p.s. A decent news video is also included with the story.

Funny that a California newspaper got the US highway part correct, but the Indiana media didn't.

I'm missing that part. Both I Indiana sites I checked call it US 421.

Worth noting that the FD reports 35 passengers on board - less than half a Horizon coach.

Wouldn't be so sure. Shoving back to Brookston siding right now.

Yep, change in plans from earlier. Some talk now of having the Cardinal pick up the equipment tonight.

I read 56. What is the real number? Sounds like it was an empty truck. Obviously, it could have been a lot worse with a hazmat or truck trailer loaded with a heavy commodity. I bet it was like a conductor friend of mine, who was sitting in a caboose, involved in a wreck once, reported: "Dick and I heard the air go into emergency and it was like we had run into a brick wall". With the cab so far in front of the locomotive, do you think the engineer ducked? I know the train is a slow runner, but does anyone know the max speed in this area?

Worth noting that the WLFI live noon report said 70 - more than a whole Horizon coach.

Magliari said 56 but the reports are all over the waterfront.

Sounds like the injuries are minor. That's a good thing.

CBS news in Chicago says that there were 59 on board, don't know if they're including the crew or not. Ten passengers injured, taken to local hospital, none serious.

True, but some injuries really do show up later. I was involved in a car accident with injuries that showed up later. Guess, what. I had already signed off. I'm stuck with it.
