GERMANTOWN — An Amtrak employee working on tracks in southern Columbia County was struck and killed by a southbound Amtrak passenger train Wednesday morning, authorities said

The accident happened at about 11 a.m. near the border of Columbia and Dutchess counties, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.

Train No. 280, traveling to Penn Station in New York City from Niagara Falls, struck the worker, a signal maintainer, who was on a section of track between Germantown and the town of Clermont near Dutchess County, said NTSB spokesman Peter Knudson in an email.

The victim's identity is being withheld pending notification of family members.

The train, which consisted of one locomotive and five cars, was carrying 182 passengers and five crew members, Knudson said.

No other injuries were reported, said Amtrak spokesman Craig Schulz said in an email.

"We are deeply saddened," Schulz said on behalf of the company.

Rail service between Albany and New York City was suspended for about three hours while Columbia County sheriff's investigators and technicians worked at the scene.

Columbia County Coroner James Bertram and Amtrak police assisted.

The federal agencies, sheriff's investigators and Amtrak officials are still investigating to determine factors leading to the accident.
