amtrak service to Anaheim
Author: zuchrew

Service for Amtrak and Metrolink at the new ARTIC station will begin Saturday, December 6, 2014. The grand opening will be on December 13, 2014. On another note, while parking will be free initially, a fee in the future may be coming.

Hmmm...Pay for Parking. Great way to incentivize use of public transit. This brain trust must be classmates of the ones who figure the way to incentivize use of HOV lanes is to charge a toll.

That's either a dishonest or ignorant statement, that's not why tolls are used for HOV lanes. The toll is planned from the beginning because there are not enough taxes to build it, or to free up tax money for more infrastructure projects, or to build it sooner instead of waiting for enough tax funds to be committed. Existing HOV lanes may be converted to tolls to bring in more funds to cover maintenance and subsidize other public projects. Existing HOV lanes may also be converted to all access toll lanes for similar reasons but using variable pricing to limit demand at the busiest times. An attempt to limit congestion and keep speeds above a set amount (55 mph is typical). Knowing you are probably going to save time and bypass congestion being the incentive to encourage use up to a point, and then higher prices to discourage use when it gets close to being too crowded.

Land in SoCal ain't close to free, so free parking is subsidized parking. Maybe that's good, maybe not, a reasonable argument can be made for each position.

Doesn't Irvine and San Juan Capo. already charge for parking? What about Tustin?

The is a pay parking structure at San Juan Capo., but Irvine and Tustin are still free.

The new Anaheim station will have three parking areas: one on the north side of the depot (the main entrance), a smaller area south of the depot and an area in the Anaheim Stadium parking lot near where the current Anaheim station parking area is. The parking area north of the depot would be affected by events at the Honda Center and the stadium if it was an open free lot. When the ARTIC starts placing parking restrictions on on the lots will be some time in the future.
