Passenger Trains > Amtrak 6 on the Overland RouteDate: 11/23/14 19:31 Amtrak 6 on the Overland Route Author: mopac1978 I happened to come across Amtrak 6 detouring on the Overland Route this morning, here's a few photos of it and a subsequent ZG1SC train heading west.
1, 2, & 3) Amtrak 6 is seen here at Emory, UT heading east on the uphill track Date: 11/23/14 19:38 Re: Amtrak 6 on the Overland Route Author: ProAmtrak Christmas Card Pics for sure man, nice job!
Date: 11/23/14 19:40 Re: Amtrak 6 on the Overland Route Author: mopac1978 Since we were heading west, and I had to get off at the Emory exit for the first shot, there was no return to I-84 going west. And I didn't really want to drive all the way to Echo on a completely snow covered road. So we doubled back to the Castle Rock exit to return to westbound I-84. That gave me the chance to shoot the ZG1SC train coming down the hill there.
4, 5) ZG1SC coming around the tight curve at Castle Rock, and a wider view of the whole train snaking back in the distance. It was quite a lengthy train, but had just the four units on the point. 6) One more shot at Henefer, UT. Wow, does it ever look cold there. I was forced to endure yet another day of bright sun, blue skies and temperatures in the 70s here in Carpinteria today. I don't think I would last 10 minutes in that snow. Date: 11/23/14 19:49 Re: Amtrak 6 on the Overland Route Author: IC_2024 Excellent, mopac1978! I'll vote IOTD for the first shot leaning into the curve-- thanks for sharing!

Probably drove 1500 miles and waited in the cold most of the night for the "grab shots" to appear. Am I right?

Actually, we were just traveling west for a family visit. I happened to check the CAD screens as we passed Wasatch, and I saw AMT 6 on the screen. After an initial "what the" moment I quickly realized it was a detour and headed for the first safe shot, not wanting to stop on the shoulder of the road given the snow conditions at the time. The last time I was on the detour, I stayed up after SLC and really took in the terrain as we made the ascent. It's an interesting area and not one that gets covered on TO very often. Nice work!

like someone else said you "can really feel the cold" in these images. Many of us wish we could get out there east of Ogden, and have a look at this historic part of the UP, but it's hard to do so thank you for the pictures!
