Damage to trackage in Baltimore worse than expected
Author: GenePoon

The damage to Amtrak trackage between Baltimore Penn Station and
West Baltimore that has necessitated emergency trackwork and
single-tracking, causing delays, has been revealed as being
"more significant than first thought."

MARC says the problem is to one of the two tracks in the
B&P Tunnel. The work was estimated to be done by Thursday,
Dec. 18 but now will continue until Wednesday, Dec. 24.

I'm ALWAYS amazed the dang thing is still standing. I remember walking through the tunnel back in the days when I was a Tower Operator at B&P Jct tower (interlocking now named "Charles"). This was done with a track inspector while the one of the tracks was out of service for the installation of the concrete floor/trackbed. I remember how much water was running through the tunnel just from seeps in the walls. Later on during one of my head-end road trips on a rainy day I noticed even more water coming out of the walls. Back then every Wednesday night one track was taken OOS so that a special truck could go into the tunnel and pump grout into the walls.
