Not a good day, Washington-Baltimore
Author: GenePoon

In addition to the delays due to single-tracking for emergency trackwork
in the B&P Tunnels (still scheduled to be finished on Christmas Eve), now
there is double-tracking at BWI Airport instead of triple-tracking, due
to a broken-down MARC train. Northbound Amtrak and MARC trains will have
to use only the low-level platforms at BWI until the broken-down MARC is moved.

Just checked the Dixieland website (6:45pm EST) and no delays are currently being shown.

If this occurred earlier in the day; apparently it was minor; and things were cleared up quickly.

Delays continued until about 545pm. Since then the MARC train has been moved.
MARC is still experiencing delays due to backed-up equipment and will combine
at least one pair of trains. One northbound MARC was cancelled and
passengers handled on Amtrak at MARC fares.

Since I'm interested in the Acela service; I check every Acela arrival at Washington today, from 1pm until the present (7:00pm).

If this disruption happened after 1pm (?); it had little effect on Acela. (I didn't check morning trains).

I was surprised to see that several Acela's arrived early. And the Acela's that did arrive late, were down by 10" or less (which I consider on time).

So, hopefully, this was actually a good day for Acela DC arrivals.

So you're not interested in anything else? Elitist! <G>

There was a lesser effect on southbounds, which could use
their normal platforms at BWI. Northbounds had to use the low
level platform since the broken-down MARC was on the northbound
high-level platform.

There is also a schedule pad into Washington (actually several,
as indicated by timetable times between Washington and BWI at
Landover, New Carrolton, Bowie and Grove. An Acela that leaves
Baltimore on time will almost always arrive early into Washington
if not delayed entering Washington Union Station. If Washington
Terminal sees to it that an Acela that is somewhat late can
enter the station without delay waiting for an open track or for its
route to the station to clear, it can make up a lot of delay.
An Acela that was ten minutes late into Washington was probably late
previously.

Gene:

So, tell us again, why did you report this as "not a good day"?

What magnitude of delay to Amtrak are you talking about?

Joe

PS: Yep! very interested in Acela; there great!! Would loved to have ridden the 1938 streamlined Century; bet that was sensational also! But that's ancient history. Acela is our generation's great train.
