I remember working that yard when it was practically brand new in the 80's when the old PC facility was completely rebuilt. We still called the north end, "old yard" and south end "new yard." Now, it's starting to look a little tired-- cracks in the concrete and a tired look.. It's been over 30 years ago, so it's understandable... Nice shots, thanks for posting

Cracks and wrinkles, right Mark? Yeah, but Ed's throwback machine makes it all good! Looks like he might have purchased the Wisconsin & Southern dome.

Well the owner of the two Northern cars just might disagree with that statement. They are on long term storage in Chicago pending their next trip.
Also, the yard tracks and platforms have been undergoing extensive rebuilds for the last two years. The 480V ground power is now supplied through new overhead gantries (visible in Seths first photo) and the water system has been completely rebuilt with new heated housings and mechanical hose rewind systems. It's far better there now than it was a year or two ago. The turnouts are no longer hand thrown as in years past but are all handled by a Chicago yard controller. All the new signals at every switch make this place look like every kids dream Lionel layout at night.

Most of that work was done in 2010-2011 - time flies! The only platforms rebuilt were the ones between T14-T13 and T13-T12 along the river. The reconstruction of the rest of them in service was deemed to expensive when we were doing the program and cut from the scope to save several tens of millions.

That is the large structure crossing all of the tracks in the background.

That's the silver cabinets on the narrow platforms.

It is very cool looking if you get a good night photo down the leads between the coach shop and the S&I.

They've brought the platform renewal in house, B&B Dept has been doing this each year since the end of the project. In 2013 we did the platform on the north end of R-1/R-2. 2014 we did the north end of T-5/T-6, and T-1/T-2

The two red and gray cars are Dave Hoffman's. They are quite nice. We acquired the three WSOR gallery cars.
